This guide provides marine maintenance and repair yards with waste minimization options. It also provides worksheets designed to be used for waste minimization assessment of a marine repair and service yard, to be used in developing an understanding of the yard=s waste generating processes and to suggest ways to reduce the waste. Appendices contain summaries of waste minimization assessments and information resources.

Further consideration is given to key issues that impact the industry, such as productivity, safety, labor, environmental impacts, security, legal, and regulatory issues. Technological innovations are also covered, including developments affecting hardware (e.g., material handling equipment and terminal facilities design), marine terminal operations, terminal management, and automated systems.

This 1994 report is the fourth in a recent series than continues the capital expenditure survey first begun by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 1956. Subsequent reports were published by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and currently by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). This report analyzes the results of the AAPA capital expenditure survey for 1992, which included the capital expenditures for 1992 and proposed expenditures for the period 1993 through 1997 and with the funding sources used to finance these expenditures. Appendix A contains a list of ports that responded to the 1992 survey.
